“I’m Shipping Up To Boston” by Dropkick Murphys

On the list of reasons why the GOP is pissing me off this election year, this is a relatively minor item—but a funny one.  Here’s a note from the Dropkick Murphys’ Facebook page:

We just got word that Wisconsin State Rep and Speaker of the State Assembly Jeff Fitzgerald used “Shipping Up To Boston” as his walk-on song yesterday at the Wisconsin GOP Convention in Green Bay.

The stupidity and irony of this is laughable. A Wisconsin Republican U.S. Senate candidate - and crony of anti-Union Governor Scott Walker - using a Dropkick Murphys song as an intro is like a white supremacist coming out to gangsta rap!

Why the fuck did Fitzgerald pick this song?  It was written by a proud left-wing agitator named Woody Guthrie, and performed by a band that is notoriously pro-union (remind me to post “Boys On The Docks” or their version of “Which Side Are You On?” for chrissakes).  And last I checked, Wisconsin is nowhere near Boston.  So why this song?  Well, Fitzgerald responded that he’s been a “big fan” of the Dropkick Murphys ever since he heard this song in that movie The Departed.  Some fan—I’ll bet he couldn’t name another Murphys song to save his life.  So why this song?  Well, I’m forced to the conclusion that Rep. Fitzgerald wanted to walk onstage fantasizing he’s a gangster in a Scorsese movie.  Yes, this man right here:

Jeff Fitzgerald

Get it now?  No wonder he used this song.  This sad sack of shit needs all the help he can get.

And I thought British politics was rife with controversy. Got the idea - rebel rousing & upbeat, but how on earth did he ever think this was going to win him votes???
